Many teens avoid speaking up because they worry about being laughed at, saying the wrong thing, or sounding “weird.” The fear of embarrassment or social rejection can completely shut them down — especially in front of peers. Parents often see this when their teen won’t even raise their hand in class or dreads presentations.
Teens often don’t know how to organize their thoughts into something that flows. Without a clear way to begin, explain, and end what they want to say, they get overwhelmed and anxious. Parents may notice their child struggling to explain ideas or giving vague, mumbled responses when under pressure.
In an effort to “sound smart” or do it “right,” teens can lose their authentic voice. They speak in a robotic way or shut down completely. Parents may sense their teen isn’t connecting or sounds overly rehearsed or flat when presenting — and they’re right. Confidence doesn’t come from being perfect, it comes from being real.
